Lily Schultz

Lily Schultz of Kalamazoo passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2020. Lily was the proud family member of the Schultz family. Lily was born in 2008 in Allegan, MI. After she turned one year, she was put up for adoption due to circumstances at her home. In 2009, Kathy, determined to have a family pet that would scare off home invaders, was looking for a large dog. In her search, she looked to Allegan County where a sweet, large black lab with a bit of Great Dane was put up for adoption. She took a drive in a snow storm to bring home her new baby. Kathy didn't know much about Lily's history, but soon found out that Lily was an outdoor dog and had never been in the house. So in her welcome home, Kathy had to lift the 100 Lily up the stairs and tell her it was okay to be inside. Days later, after her spay, she ate a bottle of pain medication and had to have her stomach char-coaled. This was the first wave of many naughty things, including eating off the table and nosing the garbage. Lily became an instant family member to William, Thomas, and baby Amanda. She followed Amanda around and waited for her to drop bits of food or throw something to catch. Lily often watched out the window for her "boys" to come home from school. She also made it know whenever someone was walking by the house. The mailman was her favorite to bark and bristle at but once an exchange was made to say Hello, she became an instant friend and began to lean during her pets. Lily loved her Kong with treats at 7:00 every night and threw it at whomever was around to make sure they knew what she wanted. She was an expert hand shaker. She learned to speak in the past few years and her voice was loud when she wanted to eat or go outside. Kathy always said she had the body of the Dane and the brain of a Lab. She chased the neighbor dogs, so she had to be watched outside, but when told to get back to the yard, she'd come inside, tuck her tail and go to bed, knowing she was just naughty. Even though she wasn't allowed on the couch, she'd sneak to lay down, but when she heard someone coming, she'd jump down, go lay on her bed and look like she was sleeping. Lily would also take advantage of her buddy, Osceola, and his niceness by getting a scope of food before Kathy got home to feed her and hang out on the back porch, or in the yard to get some fresh air during the day. Calling her name by the back door meant she was going outside and her big, goofy body would run through the house to hang out. Even days before she passed, she was running around the yard chasing squirrels and birds. Her best friend for the past 3 years was Cali. Cali and Lily hung out on Lily's bed, and Lily always showed her annoyance with Cali, the bed hog, and laid down next to her. If someone asked Lily to get Cali, she would search for her and sniff at Cali, but never bite or was aggressive. She didn't like Cali getting too close though. Lily leaves behind her mom, Kathy, her boys, William and Thomas, her girl, Amanda, and her many friends, including Osceola, Micco, Cory, Ben and Jana. We loved having Lily as a part of our family the past 10 years. She will be missed for all her goofy and sweet ways. We love you, Lily. Lily is being cared for by Avink Pet Memorial, 129 S. Grand, Schoolcraft, MI 49087 (269-679-5622).
